My artwork is always inspired by my love of reading. This series of work is inspired by Owen Barfield’s essay The Rediscovery of Meaning and The Power of Myth by Joseph Campbell. Both works deal with themes of a critique of progress of the modern world, an alienation from nature, and how these have contributed to the destruction of meaning resulting in the inherent standard of loneliness for humanity. These themes define my own artwork as I capture a re-connection to a healthy state of solitude and an exploration of the blindness to the inherent meaning, beauty, and spiritual potency of the natural world. In my artwork, I enjoy loosely interpreting my subject matter to give the overall effect of a dreamlike and nostalgic quality. Also, I incorporate an Expressionist style and sometimes nonsensical subject matter to explore how these qualities can cause a reconsideration of the natural world. The representations of silent spaces offer a fresh perspective on the ways in which meaning is constructed within individuals.
